Blog/Vipp Chimney House: A Landmark Reborn

Vipp Chimney House - Living Room

Vipp Chimney House is situated in a former water pumping station built in 1902.

A former water pumping station in northern Copenhagen is given a new lease of life as the third outpost of the Vipp Hotel.

Vipp Chimney House has been named after the 35-metre tall chimney that towers above the former water pumping station.

Danish design brand Vipp is best known for its iconic pedal bin designed in 1939 by Vipp founder Holger Nielsen. Over the years, under the direction of Nielson’s youngest daughter, Jette Egelund, Vipp has extended its product range to include home accessories, lighting, furniture and a kitchen.

The family-run business has also opened a small, untraditional chain of hotels. Instead of having many rooms in one location, Vipp offers unique self-service rooms at various destinations. There are currently three locations: the Vipp Loft in Copenhagen; the Vipp Shelter on the mythical lake Immeln in Sweden; and the newly opened Vipp Chimney House in northern Copenhagen.

The third outpost of the Vipp hotel has been named after the 35-metre tall chimney that towers above the former water pumping station that now houses the 200 m2 guesthouse. Built in 1902, the pumping station was left in ruins until Vipp commissioned Danish architect David Thulstrup to convert the heritage building into the third Vipp-fitted-destination.

Thulstrup has retained the charm of the architectural shell but the original, industrial space has been extended with a cutting-edge, modern overlay. High ceilings peak in the atrium at 8.5m where a skylight provides views to the old chimney.

Architectural highlights of the Vipp Chimney House include arch doors in steel-framed glass, custom terrazzo flooring, a modern steel staircase and open access to a private terrace. The hotel has two bathrooms, two bedrooms and a large open plan kitchen, dining and living space that can accommodate a maximum of four adults.

Like its predecessors, Vipp Chimney House is a carefully curated setting where guests have the opportunity to experience Vipp products first-hand, including the brand’s new furniture.

“For me it was a dream architectural project, from the strong gestures of the building to the finest interior detailing. I was encouraged to make it edgy, and with that I wanted to add the personality, comfort and aesthetics of a private residence. I wanted people to feel at home.” – David Thulstrup, architect and founder of Studio David Thulstrup.

“The Vipp Hotel is our take on haute-couture in the design business. Each room is custom-fitted and is executed with an extreme attention to detail. But instead of being unattainable spaces, you can actually check-in.” - Kasper Egelund, CEO and third generation Vipp owner.
