The first West Coast outpost for London-based hotelier Ennismore, The Hoxton; a series of open-house hotels inspired by the diversity and originality of its surrounding neighbourhood, has opened in Portland, Oregon.
Located within the abandoned Grove Hotel in historic Old Town Chinatown, the hotel features 119 bedrooms each cleverly designed to make the most of the available space. Shoebox, Snug, Cosy or Roomy, the rooms interiors, completed by Ennismore’s in-house design studio, are inspired by the northwest modernist movement which flourished along the West Coast during the 1960s.
Mid-century accents and leather and velvet armchairs rest amongst original timber columns, concrete tiles, wooden walls, and exposed brick. Floor-to-ceiling windows enhance city views. In-room bookshelves are individually curated by Hox Friends; a collection of Portlanders recruited to share their recommendations and neighbourhood tips.
Tope, a rooftop taqueria with cocktails and small plates inspired by Mexico’s street food offers exclusive views of the city. La Neta, on the ground floor, serves a Mexican inspired fare driven by the seasons. A discreet basement bar serves inventive cocktails. A multifunctional events space called the Apartment is made up of distinctly designed rooms with a communal pantry style kitchen.
